New Orleans, LA-The Louisiana Wetlands Action Program–a program of Global Green USA’s New Orleans office–and Tierra Resources will host an interactive workshop on blue carbon, an innovative opportunity for landowners to finance wetland restoration. It will also include a brief session on other new restoration technologies being tested in the region. The event will be held May 22, 2013 at the St. Charles Parish West Regional Library, 105 Lakewood Drive, Luling, LA, from 12-4pm.

Wetland landowners, government officials and other interested attendees will learn about opportunities for private industry to invest in wetland restoration projects to offset emissions. Global Green and Tierra Resources have designed the workshop to provide detailed information on carbon markets, the steps involved in project development, and how landowners and other stakeholders can become involved. “Blue carbon is an innovative idea and there is still a lot to learn about how it works to finance restoration,” said Jeff Supak, Program Coordinator for Global Green. “We see blue carbon as a new tool that can be added to our ‘coastal restoration toolbox.’ In Southeast Louisiana, you can never have too many resources to restore the coast.”

The event will conclude with a tour of Tierra Resources and St. Charles Parish’s groundbreaking wetland carbon pilot project in Luling. The Luling Oxidation Pond Wetlands Assimilation pilot-supported by Entergy Corporation’s Environmental Initiatives Fund-is the first wetland restoration offset project in the nation applying Tierra’s nationally certified methodology; a methodology enabling the introduction of wetland restoration to carbon markets. Locally based Comite Resources is leading the carbon monitoring efforts while Portland, Ore. based nonprofit, The Climate Trust, is working with Tierra to design, implement and market these innovative carbon projects.

“We are pleased to work with Global Green in getting the word out to landowners about this exciting opportunity to restore wetlands in the vulnerable Mississippi River Delta,” said Dr. Sarah Mack, President and CEO of Tierra Resources. “Landowners can offset the costs for these restoration activities through the sale of registered carbon credits. A win-win for landowners and the environment.”

About Global Green and its Louisiana Wetland Action Program
Global Green’s mission is to foster a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future by advocating for smart solutions. Its New Orleans office opened shortly after Hurricane Katrina to provide support for the sustainable rebuilding of the Gulf Coast. Current projects include the Holy Cross Project, a model green village in the Lower 9th Ward; NOLA Wise, an energy efficiency retrofit program; and the Louisiana Wetlands Action Program (LWAP). LWAP supports Global Green’s mission by educating wetland owners about, and encouraging them to take action on, coastal restoration opportunities, with a focus on the emerging carbon market as a financing tool.

About Tierra Resources
Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Tierra Resources was founded in 2007 with a mission to conserve, protect, and restore coastal wetland ecosystems by creating innovative solutions that support investment into blue carbon contained in coastal wetland ecosystems such as estuaries, mangroves, and salt marshes. Tierra’s services enable landowners, corporations, nonprofits, and government clients to understand the regulatory, financial, and scientific landscape to preserve and restore wetlands and monetize wetland offsets.
